This dramatised reading features Lamartine, poet and politically committed man, and Marianne, his wife, evoking the poet's social and political career. Alphonse de Lamartine was the Romantic poet of Méditations poétiques, and of that magnificent poem dedicated to an unfulfilled love, Le lac. Who knows that he was a diplomat, town councillor, general councillor, President of the General Council of Saône et Loire, Member of Parliament for twenty years, Minister of Foreign Affairs in the Provisional Government of the Second Republic, which he proclaimed in Paris. He fought for freedom of the press, for education, against slavery and against the death penalty in politics. He was a poet, a revolutionary and, more broadly, a visionary. Inspired by Sylvie Yvert's novel Il était une fois Lamartine, the reading brings together Alphonse and Marianne, the writer and the painter, the politician and the sculptress, the man and the woman. In the twilight of their lives, Marianne reminds Alphonse of his unrivalled poetry and his ceaseless struggle in the service of the nation and the Republic. They recall the times when stupidity and violence rubbed shoulders with intelligence and tolerance.
