Description

Retour au phare (Back to the lighthouse) is the result of a creative photographic residency carried out in the Aber Wrac?h lighthouse in autumn 2024 by Eugénie Baccot.
In her work, the artist draws inspiration from the great works of the world?s literary heritage to create poetic photographic tales.
Inspired by English author Virginia Woolf's novel To the Lighthouse, Retour au phare is a dreamlike photographic journey into the torments of family memory and maritime heritage. In this text, published in 1927, Woolf explores the feelings of a young child eager to visit a nearby lighthouse. His plans for a walk to the lighthouse are constantly delayed by the uncertainties of the weather and family tensions. Will the family ever make it to the island? This is the question the photographer asked herself as she wrote the final chapter of this novel in images, and thus conjured up the story of this family prevented from going.
The artist has interpreted Alex Haley?s American novel Racines, as well as Alexandre Dumas?s The Man in the Iron Mask. Aurélie Jourdain, Telling the horizon
Narrating light
Settle into the landscape and see the surface of the sea in a cloud, and the waves breaking on the beach in the folds of a rock. To feel intimately that all elements – liquid, aerial, plant and mineral – are interrelated. Taking a fresh look at the horizon, we discover hitherto unknown links in the environment and, through this weave of similarities, feel the unity of living things.
By plunging into light and shadow, black and gold, Aurélie Jourdain translates into drawing and painting this impulse towards greater intimacy with nature.
As the sun declines, details fade away and the essential appears. It's all there, in the elegant discretion of the obvious.
