Description

In 17th-century French sacred music under Louis XIV, the petits motets known as "de circonstance" were functional works par excellence. The polyphonic writing of these vocal works had to be relevant and concise, forcing composers to get straight to the point.
They were composed to be sung at specific liturgical moments (mass, offertory, elevation, etc.) or for particular services such as vespers, adoration of the Blessed Sacrament, etc., or to fit in with the feasts of the year, including those of the saints, as this programme in particular illustrates.
The ensemble
The Musica Spirituale Ensemble, which brings together professional and amateur musicians of a high standard, was founded in 2014. Since then, it has performed around forty times, in Essonne, Paris and the provinces. Its productions are successfully received every year thanks to an uncompromising choice of pieces, in order to build programmes that are always dynamic and supported, in the form of an accessible musicological presentation booklet.
The ensemble consists of a small choir of 8 women accompanied by period instruments (fiddle, bass and treble viol, medieval and baroque flutes, portable organ, positive organ).
Dorothée Perreau & Michel Poillot are the artistic directors.
The 1h20 programme on offer here is built around vocal works by Guillaume Dufay, Henry Du Mont, Marc-Antoine Charpentier, François Couperin and Nicolas Clérambault, a selection of highly inspired pieces performed here in an appropriate setting.
