Tout droit descendu d’Auckland NZ, à moins que ce soit encore une perle issue de la scène Londonienne, BirdBøx est un vrai coup de coeur ! Leur premier album Dreamland vient de sortir et impose déjà sa marque singulière. D’emblée, comment ne pas penser aux Black Pumas, même orchestration (guitare, batterie, trois vocalistes, pas de basse !), pour des envolées de soul vibrantes, portées par un chanteur déjà vu avec Wax Taylor ou Hocus Pocus. On trouve aussi des ingrédients purement folk, une reprise sidérante du trop rare Jordan Mackampa : « Teardrops in a Hurricane ». Parfois la musique se fait thérapie, d’autre fois elle se fait étendard ! La version métamorphosée de « Teardrops » est une antidote à la morosité actuelle, un hymne générationnel dans des temps troublés. BirdBøx, c’est une alchimie vocale rare entre un chanteur et deux choristes ; une batterie volontiers tellurique, les peaux sonnent comme des tambours, et une guitare tout en ornementations, touches de couleur finement déposées. From the outset, it's hard not to think of the Black Pumas, with the same orchestration (guitar, drums, three vocalists, no bass!), for soaring flights of vibrant soul, carried by a singer already seen with Wax Taylor or Hocus Pocus. There are also some pure folk ingredients, including a stunning cover of the all-too rare Jordan Mackampa's 'Teardrops in a Hurricane'. Sometimes the music is therapy, other times it's a banner! The metamorphosed version of 'Teardrops' is an antidote to the current gloom, a generational anthem in troubled times. BirdBøx is a rare vocal alchemy between a singer and two backing singers; a drum kit that's willingly telluric, the skins sounding like drums, and a guitar that's all ornamentation, finely laid touches of colour. BirdBøx is that elusive bird that accompanies us and comes back to land on our shoulder day after day.
