Description

If mud had a memory of its own, what would it deem worthy of remembrance? Like a fairy tale, Le Livre de la Boue offers a fertile journey through the imaginary world of marshes, stagnant waters and wetlands. Neither entirely land nor entirely water, swamps have long been perceived as ambivalent, enigmatic and ghostly places, arousing both fascination and dread. Inspired by the eponymous text and the work of visual artist and video artist Ali Cherri, Le Livre de la Boue combines poetry and musical performance in Arabic, French and English to explore the physical and metaphorical dimensions of the elements "earth" and "water". This symbolic quest transforms mud into memorial material, and tells the story of how it shapes our apprehension of the world and existence. Ali Cherri, a Beirut-born, Paris-based visual artist and video maker, has been developing an artistic practice combining cinema, performance, sculpture, drawing and installations for three decades. His work is inspired by ancient artifacts and the natural world: sculptures, drawings and installations explore the temporal gaps between ancient worlds and contemporary societies. Using archaeological artifacts as a starting point, Ali Cherri investigates the limits of the ideologies underlying the founding of nations and the myth of national progression. He explores the links between archaeology, historical narrative and heritage, considering the processes of excavation and displacement of cultural objects in museums.
