Description

Artistic Focus: Installation, Sculpture

Originally from Paris, Francis Candau has lived and worked in his studio in Castelfranc, in the Lot region, since 1986, where he has built a world of his own. In his work, screws, nuts, parts from farm machinery, and iron profiles of all kinds come together and come to life, giving rise to an unexpected world. Vegetation and fauna intertwine in a blend of fantasy, satire, and humor. Constructivist sculptures, pieces of furniture, and “bizarre creatures” command the space with their vitality. All these creations challenge and stimulate the viewer’s attention to detail. A change of context lies at the heart of these metal assemblages. It is the trace of material that once served a specific purpose, was then discarded, and is finally subjected to the alchemy of a poetic rebirth. Francis Candau’s abstract sculptures, which do not represent anything in reality—conceived as such—are merely forms liberated from the “representation” of the world. This freedom of form aims to evoke emotions and feelings through the interplay of composition, harmonies, balance, and movement.
