Description

The ruins, classified as a historical monument in 1840, are those of the Gothic church. Its construction began in the 13th century with the choir glossary. Abbot Gilbert, nicknamed the Golden Abbot, had a grand vision, he planned a building as high as Amiens cathedral, i.e. about 40m under the vault! His successor reduced the project by half. It will still be 122m long, 40m wide at the transept and 25m high under the vault. The construction was completed in the 16th century with the tower which symbolizes the Gothic art of the northern provinces. In the south transept there was a labyrinthine glossary in black and white pavement. Its design was reproduced in the quarter of the transept of the cathedral in the 19th century. The Gothic abbey church succeeded an 11th century Romanesque church known from excavations in the 19th century. The choir was paved with a mosaic, of which the museum of the Hôtel Sandelin has some very beautiful testimonies. The political role of the abbey began very early.
