During the Romantic era, the house was owned by Bertin l'Aîné, patron of the arts and director of the "Journal des Débats". From 1815 to 1841, his literary salon welcomed the political and artistic elite, from Chateaubriand to Liszt. Victor Hugo, a close friend of the Bertin family, was a regular at the Château des Roches, his favorite residence.
