Eglise Saint Martin Saint Josse – Parnes

At the bottom of a valley crossed by the Cudron, a tributary of the Epte whose floods have caused the church to suffer many vicissitudes, Saint-Martin-Saint-Josse stands out for the high spire made of frame and slate of its bell tower. First dedicated to Saint Martin, it took the name of Saint Josse after relics of this Breton saint were brought there around 1050. Foulque de Chaudry, lord of Parnes, gave the church around 1067 to the abbey of Saint-Evroul, in Normandy, which established a priory-cure there. Some buildings of the priory remain to the north. A chronicle of the time dates the construction of the church from 1089. This one, which constitutes the skeleton of the current eastern parts, will undergo many modifications thereafter as well as an undignified restoration which, in the years 1860 and 70, will make him lose much of its authenticity, quite particularly in the transept and the chorus. The transept and the choir remain of the building begun at the end of the 11th century (it was not completed in 1123). These Romanesque parts have been completely rebuilt since then, but they are still clearly identifiable in the bell tower, a massive tower with two openings and columns on each side, and in the apse. The latter has the particularity of being polygonal on the outside and hemicyclic on the inside. Cleared during the restorations of the 19th century, the base is decorated with blind arcatures. Shortly after its construction, the cul-de-four was reinforced by two ogives, a device that is found in Normandy and in the Soissonnais region. On the outside, the columns lining the window jambs – as on the inside – testify to the care taken in the Romanesque construction. With the vaulting of the transept at the beginning of the 13th century, a long series of works began which continued towards the middle of the same century with the construction of a two-bay chapel to the south of the choir. An interesting cornice with arcatures and sculpted modillions adorns its southern wall. At the end of the 13th century, the north side of the choir is, in turn, provided with a chapel. Its second bay is pierced by two large windows with a magnificent radiating network, unfortunately restored in a too dry manner. In addition to numerous repairs (the bell tower, the first bay of the choir, the windows of the transept and the south chapel…), the 16th century saw the total reconstruction of the Romanesque nave, about which nothing is known. Started with the north aisle, the work continued with the nave, doubled in the south by a side aisle as high and wide as the nave, an arrangement found in Montjavoult. The vaults are received by three particularly slender piles. The windows are all flamboyant and it is from this style that the portal, open at the end of the south aisle, claims to be. With its deep, richly decorated voussoirs crowned by a gable, it is similar to that of Chaumont-en-Vexin, a similarity reinforced by the Renaissance treatment of the tympanum. Among the furnishings, we note the baptismal font of the 16th century crowned by an aedicule of 1699 and a Virgin and Child, in stone, of the 14th century.
