Église du haut du tot – Sapois

Elevée à 840 m d’altitude, cette église n’a pas pour seul mérite d’être la plus haute du département des Vosges : elle fut construite en une année des mains des paroissiens ! Une construction hors du commun L’éloignement des lieux de culte posait problème aux habitants du Haut du Tôt qui devaient parcourir 16 à 20 km A/R pour se rendre aux offices religieux dans les églises de Vagney, de Rochesson, de Gérardmer ou du Tholy selon leur lieu d’habitation. Au début du XIXe siècle, l’idée de construire une église au centre du plateau devient la préoccupation majeure de beaucoup et leurs faibles moyens ne les découragent pas. Pendant l’hiver 1831-1832, les habitants préparent les pierres de la future église dont la plupart proviennent d’une carrière de grès située à quelques kilomètres de là en direction du Tholy. D’autres abattent les arbres et les équarrissent pour préparer la charpente. La première pierre est bénite en février 1832. Tous les habitants participent aux travaux et le 17 septembre 1832, la première messe est célébrée. L’église est alors couverte d’essis, ainsi que les façades exposées aux vents dominants.
