Surrounded by the River Rhône to the north, the arid Crau Plain to the south, the wild Camargue stretching to the west, and the Alpilles Hills cutting it off sharply to the east, Arles is like an island, but definitely not a desert island. Since Roman times, men have left traces of their civilizations on Arles and the city has made its mark on history. Today, Arles is a veritable open-air museum – as you will realize if you just stroll about its maze of narrow streets or study the ancient stones of the churches.
Any visit should start with the Arènes (Roman Amphitheatre). When it was built in the 1st century A.D., it was used for Roman games. Now it is mainly used for bull-fighting and when the feria (bull-fighting festival) takes place, thousands of aficionados and curious onlookers come to see the bull-fights. The Théâtre Antique (Roman theatre) built during the reign of Augustus is also an exceptional site. The wandering tourist can also discover Constantines Thermes (4th century baths), the Alyscamps (an early Christian necropolis lined with aged poplar trees). The town has many architectural riches such as the doorway and cloisters of Eglise Saint-Trophime (a 12th century church), two gems of the Romanesque style, and the 17th century Hôtel de Ville (Town Hall). The Roman and Romanesque historic buildings and monuments of Arles are included in Unescos World Heritage list. You can also follow a signposted walk in the footsteps of Van Gogh and explore the places he painted during his stay in Arles (1888-1889). There is a great variety of museums: Réattu Museum, Muséon Arlaten, the museum of Ancient Arles, and many more. Many festivities are held in Arles throughout the year, from the Camargue Herdsmens Festival to the international photography festival, not to mention the Prémices du Riz (Rice Harvest Festival) or the santon-makers show. On such occasions, the ladies of Arles often don their traditional costumes.
