JBR Trio est un trio conçu à l'initiative du saxophoniste tourangeau Jean-Baptiste Réhault. Avec Cédric Piromalli au piano et Samy Chapuis à la batterie, la musique du groupe s’articule autour de la relecture toujours possible et renouvelée du jazz des années 40 et 50. Dans ce « presque quartet », le piano est pensé comme un instrument central, assurant ou évitant le rôle dévolu habituellement à la contrebasse. L’ajout d’effets et de préparations légères participe également à un subtil décalage du cadre de référence. Le swing et l’espace sonore y sont variables, tour à tour vaporeux et souples, ou au contraire secs et striés, créant au fil des pièces un paysage contrasté et dynamique, parfois poétique. On y croisera alors des évocations minimalistes de Lennie Tristano, des paraphrases échevelées de Monk, ou l’image d’un Don Byas qui se serait égaré chez ECM…

JBR Trio is the brainchild of Touraine saxophonist Jean-Baptiste Réhault. With Cédric Piromalli on piano and Samy Chapuis on drums, the group?s music revolves around the ever possible and renewed reinterpretation of jazz from the 40s and 50s. In this "almost quartet", the piano is conceived as a central instrument, assuming or avoiding the role usually assigned to the double bass. The addition of effects and light preparations also contributes to a subtle shift in the frame of reference. Swing and sonic space are variable, by turns vaporous and supple, or dry and striated, creating a contrasting, dynamic and sometimes poetic landscape. We come across minimalist evocations of Lennie Tristano, disheveled paraphrases of Monk, or the image of a Don Byas who has lost his way at ECM?

JBR Trio ist ein Trio, das auf Initiative des Saxophonisten Jean-Baptiste Réhault aus Tours gegründet wurde. Mit Cédric Piromalli am Klavier und Samy Chapuis am Schlagzeug dreht sich die Musik der Gruppe um die immer wieder mögliche und erneuerte Neuinterpretation des Jazz der 40er und 50er Jahre. In diesem "Fast-Quartett" ist das Klavier als zentrales Instrument gedacht, das die Rolle des Kontrabasses übernimmt oder umgeht. Die Hinzufügung von Effekten und leichten Präparationen trägt ebenfalls zu einer subtilen Verschiebung des Bezugsrahmens bei. Der Swing und der Klangraum sind variabel, dampfend und geschmeidig, aber auch trocken und zerklüftet, was im Laufe der Stücke eine kontrastreiche, dynamische und manchmal poetische Landschaft entstehen lässt. Man begegnet minimalistischen Anklängen an Lennie Tristano, wilden Paraphrasen von Monk oder dem Bild eines Don Byas, der sich zu ECM verirrt hat?

Met Cédric Piromalli op piano en Samy Chapuis op drums draait de muziek van de groep om de altijd aanwezige, steeds vernieuwde herinterpretatie van jazz uit de jaren '40 en '50. In dit 'bijna kwartet' wordt de piano opgevat als een centraal instrument, dat de rol die gewoonlijk aan de contrabas wordt toebedeeld overneemt of vermijdt. De toevoeging van effecten en lichte voorbereidingen draagt ook bij aan een subtiele verschuiving van het referentiekader. De swing en de geluidsruimte zijn variabel, afwisselend dampig en soepel, of juist droog en gestreept, waardoor over de stukken heen een contrastrijk en dynamisch landschap ontstaat, soms poëtisch. Komen we minimalistische evocaties van Lennie Tristano tegen, verfomfaaide parafrases van Monk, of het beeld van een Don Byas die de weg kwijt is bij ECM?

En este "casi cuarteto", el piano se concibe como instrumento central, asumiendo o evitando el papel habitualmente asignado al contrabajo. La adición de efectos y preparaciones ligeras también contribuye a un sutil desplazamiento del marco de referencia. El swing y el espacio sonoro son variables, por turnos vaporosos y flexibles, o secos y estriados, creando un paisaje contrastado, dinámico y a veces poético. Il JBR Trio nasce da un'idea del sassofonista della Touraine Jean-Baptiste Réhault. Con Cédric Piromalli al pianoforte e Samy Chapuis alla batteria, la musica del gruppo ruota attorno alla reinterpretazione, sempre attuale e sempre rinnovata, del jazz degli anni '40 e '50. In questo "quasi quartetto", il pianoforte è concepito come strumento centrale, assumendo o evitando il ruolo solitamente assegnato al contrabbasso. Anche l'aggiunta di effetti e preparazioni leggere contribuisce a un sottile spostamento del quadro di riferimento. L'oscillazione e lo spazio sonoro sono variabili, a volte vaporosi e morbidi, o al contrario secchi e striati, creando nei brani un paesaggio contrastato e dinamico, a volte poetico. Ci imbattiamo in evocazioni minimaliste di Lennie Tristano, in parafrasi scomposte di Monk, o nell'immagine di un Don Byas che ha perso la strada alla ECM?
