La VD9, à l'instar des autres voies de ce type, emprunte de petites routes paisibles. Cependant, certaines sections présentent des dénivelés importants, notamment aux abords de Bazouges-la-Pérouse et entre Saint-Ouen-des-Alleux et Saint-Marc-sur-Couesnon. De ce fait, cet itinéraire est plutôt recommandé aux cyclistes sportifs et entraînés, et moins adapté à ceux qui débutent, manquent d'expérience ou sont lourdement chargés.
