Situé sur une petite colline dominant les environs, le bourg, qui tient son surnom de la ferme des Échelles, ancien siège de la seigneurie de paroisse, offre un cadre architectural et paysager préservé, dominé par l'église Saint-Jean-Baptiste. Construite au XIIe siècle, cette église a fait l'objet au XVIe siècle de travaux d'embellissement : en subsistent la voute en lambris peint reposant, fait rarissime, sur des poteaux placés contre les murs, et surtout les vestiges d'un extraordinaire retable en calcaire sculpté et peint, daté de 1558. Situated on a small hill overlooking the surrounding countryside, the village, which takes its nickname from the Échelles farm, the former seat of the parish seigneury, offers a well-preserved architectural and landscape setting, dominated by the Saint-Jean-Baptiste church.
